Frequently Asked Questions
Skilled Nursing
Q: Does Medicare cover the total cost of nursing care?
A: Medicare pays for skilled care, for up to 100 days, only if certain conditions are met:
1. There has been a 3-day hospital stay within the month prior to admission;
2. There is a need for skilled service, such as daily physical, speech, or occupational therapy, or Nursing care that involves wound care, IVs or a feeding tube;
3. If, in the case that therapy is being utilized, progress is being made.
Medicare will pay for 20 days of care, and the remaining 80 days requires the resident to pay a co-pay, which may or may not be covered by secondary insurance.
